Embarking on a New Chapter

The Columbia Flier Building was a symbol of history and opportunity in Howard County, Maryland. Constructed in 1978, this iconic structure served as the headquarters of the Columbia Flier, Howard County’s cherished local newspaper, for over three decades. Today, the space represents our ability to write a new future for this community. It becomes the focal point for redevelopment and innovation, driven by the vision of the Howard County government and the hopes and dreams of its people.

A Past to Remember. A Promise to Keep.

Designed by Columbia resident and architect Bob Moon, the Columbia Flier Building has been a striking presence along Little Patuxent Parkway since its inception. For 33 years, it housed the operations of the Columbia Flier, chronicling the growth and development of Columbia and its surrounding areas. In 2014, the Howard County government acquired the building, paving the way for its transformation into a new era of purpose and significance.

The Source: A Community Vision, Realized.

The Source represents a long-standing community aspiration to reimagine the Flier Building as a dynamic center of civic life, retail, and community-facing commercial activity. It began with Howard County’s competitive RFP process under Council Resolution CR174-2020, designed to identify a visionary team capable of acquiring and transforming the historic site into a beneficial asset for the community. From this process emerged the Columbia Concepts–Flier partnership, uniting the grassroots leadership of Columbia Community Care with the real-estate expertise of Columbia Concepts. Our proposal aligned seamlessly with community priorities, honoring the Flier’s legacy, expanding recreation, and creating an inclusive, financially sustainable community hub.
What followed was extraordinary collaboration among County leaders, community organizations, educators, nonprofit partners, and residents. Together, we advanced a shared vision for a vibrant, accessible, intergenerational center reflective of Howard County’s diversity and values. This public–private partnership model enables the County to deliver more public-facing amenities far faster and at lower cost than a traditional County-built facility.
Rooted in the Flier’s legacy as a hub of connection and community identity, The Source will become Howard County’s first fully integrated, multi-service civic hub—bringing recreation, early childhood education, behavioral health, youth development, food access, and small-business entrepreneurship under one roof, eliminating barriers and expanding opportunity for all residents. The community’s overwhelming support and the sustained engagement with the County affirms The Source’s transformative potential.
